Residence and Work

Residence permits, work permits and stay permits in Spain.

We advise you on the right legal route for your professional profile, business project or study plan.

Main types of permit

There are different types of permit depending on your professional profile, business project or study plan.

Employed and self-employed work

  • Employed work: For people hired by companies or employers in Spain (requires passing the national employment situation test or falling under an exemption).
  • Self-employed work: For entrepreneurs and professionals who want to open their own business or work as freelancers in Spain.

Highly qualified professionals and digital nomads (Startups Law)

  • Highly qualified professionals: For managers, technical staff or university graduates hired by companies of a certain size.
  • Digital nomads: A residence permit for professionals who work remotely for companies based outside Spain.

Student stay and work permit

  • Student stay: A visa or permit to pursue higher education, master's degrees or training at accredited institutions.
  • Switching to work: Combining a student stay with part-time work, or switching directly to a residence and work permit when you finish your studies.

Renewals and modifications

Timely handling and filing of your permit renewals: under the current Regulation, residence and work renewals are granted for 4 years, unless long-term residence applies. You must apply within the two months before expiry or the three months after it.
