Ways to obtain Spanish nationality

There are different ways to become a citizen depending on how long you have lived in Spain or on your family circumstances:

Nationality by residence

This is the most common route. It requires legal, continuous residence in Spain immediately before the application.

10 years

General rule.

5 years

For people who have been granted refugee status.

2 years

For nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea or Portugal, and for Sephardic Jews.

1 year

For people born in Spanish territory, spouses of Spanish nationals, or people born outside Spain to a father or mother who was originally Spanish.

Nationality by option

For people who are or have been under the parental authority of a Spanish national, or whose father or mother was originally Spanish and born in Spain.

Nationality by simple presumption

For children born in Spain to foreign parents whose countries of origin do not automatically grant nationality to a child born abroad.

Main general requirements

  • Good civic conduct

No criminal record in Spain or in your country of origin.

  • Sufficient degree of integration

Passing the Instituto Cervantes exams (CCSE on constitutional and sociocultural knowledge, and the DELE A2 language exam if your country of origin is not Spanish-speaking), unless officially exempted.

  • Continuous residence

Meeting the legal time periods without long absences from Spain.

Frequently asked questions about nationality

Can I leave Spain while my nationality application is being processed?

Yes, but it is essential not to exceed the time limits outside the country so as not to break the continuous residence required by law.

How long does it take to get a decision?

The legal deadline for a decision is 1 year, although proper online filing considerably speeds up the stages of the process.
